No one likes going to an interview, they’re pretty nerve-racking! If you’ve got to this stage you’re doing quite well. Chances are you’ve already beaten off plenty of competition and are now down to the final few.
When you’re prepping for your interview you’re likely to spend ages thinking about what to say and how to sell yourself best, but we don’t spend much time thinking about what NOT to say. Here’s what we think you should never say in an interview…
“Sorry I’m late”
Do not be late! It goes without saying that being on time is key because your potential new employer will judge everything you say and do during the interview process. If you’re late this will be their first impression of you and first impressions count.
“I didn’t get along with my last boss”
Saying anything remotely similar to this will set alarm bells ringing because speaking badly of a previous employer is very unprofessional. Plus, your new employer may call your old employer for a reference, so it’s never a good idea to burn bridges.
“No, I don’t have any questions”
Surely you must have! It’s unlikely that the interviewer has told you everything you want to know about the company, the role and the recruitment process. Even if you ask “when will I hear from you next?” that’s better than nothing. Here are some examples of questions you could ask.
“So, what does your company do?”
This is an absolute no, no because it’s essential that you research the company you’re applying to work for. Plus, if you haven’t done your research how do you know you want to work there?
“I don’t think I have any flaws”
Everyone has flaws and employers know this. If you tell them you don’t have any they might think you’re lying. Be prepared to share some of your shortcomings, just make sure whatever the weakness is it’s not central to the job role you’re applying for. You could tell them about a weakness that you’re working on improving as this shows you’re keen to work on self-improvement. Here are some ways you could answer this question.
