Nowadays a fancy qualification just doesn’t cut it when applying for a job opening, and even a long list of work experience sometimes isn’t enough anymore. Most employers look for well-rounded candidates to fill the opening within their business, which means they’re on the lookout for skills and qualities that make you stand out from the crowd, some are obvious; others not-so-much. Clearly there are specific skills that are required depending on the role you’re applying for, but what are the top skills that most employers look for in general?
Having good communication skills is one of the basic foundations to being an eye-catching candidate. In most cases this includes both written and verbal, as a variety of job roles will require you to communicate not only face to face but also through written documents. This doesn’t mean you have to be the Shakespeare of the 21st century, but being able to easily and fluently get ideas and information across is key to being the right person for the job.
This is one of the not-so obvious skills that employers have their eye out for, although still very important nevertheless. Basically, this is having a general understanding of how the business and industry you’re hoping to flourish in works. It makes sense really, as if you’re looking to make yourself a living off what you’re doing you’re going to need to know the ins and outs. The best solution to this is to do some research before you even get offered an interview, so when you show that you know what you’re getting yourself into, it will definitely help to set you apart from the candidates that didn’t do their homework.
Having the ability to work well within a team is a very valuable skill in the eyes of an employer. If you’re able to cooperative with others and contribute to meeting team goals you will be much more likely to get the upper hand over other candidates that don’t demonstrate this as confidently. If you’re not able to work properly within a team of people you might as well just show yourself the door.
Organisation is a simple skill to demonstrate when going through the recruitment process. This links in with commercial awareness, as doing some research on the company and industry will work towards proving you’re a well-organised candidate. Other obvious things such as turning up early, sending an up to date CV and wearing the appropriate clothing will clearly show your organisation skills before you’ve even opened your mouth.
Motivation and Perseverance
You can’t always rely on others to offer motivation and help you see the light at the end of the tunnel, a lot of the time you have to be your own picker-upper. Everyone has troubles and hard times, but what makes an outstanding candidate is the ability to persevere no matter what the situation, and do so with their head held high. If you can prove that you have a genuine drive to succeed, almost any employer will see you as their ideal candidate and will no doubt put you in their good books above others.Go Back
